What is Design Research?
Design research definition by L. Bruce Archer:
“Design research is systematic inquiry whose goal
is knowledge of, or in, the embodiment of configuration, composition,
structure, purpose, value, and meaning in man-made things
and systems.”
What is Design Research??
A. Design research is concerned with the physical embodiment of man-made things, how these things perform their jobs.
B Design research is concerned with construction as human activity, how designers work, how they think, and how they carry out design activity.
C Design research is concerned with what is achieved at the end of a purposeful design activity, how an artificial thing appears, and what it means.
D Design research is concerned with the embodiment of configurations.
E Design research is a systematic search and acquisition of knowledge related to design and design activity
-Overall activities of design research = "science of artificial"
- Christopher Frayling states "Research through are art and design is less straight forward, but still identifiable and visible," consisting of material research, developmental work, and action research.
- De stijl: attempt and desire to "scientize" design in the 20s
- Bauhaus - methodological foundation for design education
-Gropius envisioned a desire to produce works of art and design based on objectivity and rationality.
- "Dymaxion" or "4D" - a "design science" that would obtain maximum human advantage from a minimum use of energy and materials.
Role of Design Methods in Design Research
- History of design methods and research began with applying large-scale NASA and military technical problems to civilian and other design areas in the 50s and 60s.
-After WWII, new inventions intrigued many designers to become interested in the methods and techniques.
- technological developments and mass production caused design interests to shift from hardware and form to consideration of human needs.
First generation Design Methodology had turned into a sort of academic subculture.
Second-Generation Design Methods
"What is design research that it is different from other forms of research?"
- Research in Europe concentrated on housing design and performance. After WWII. Prefabricated buildings were in need in Europe.
-Prefabricated building design, and research on the coordinated building elements and the building layout optimization were well-accepted research subjects in the universities as well as in the research centers.
-applying scientific methods to design problems in new housing construction.
- various environmental characteristics of housing were applied and encouraged.
"The first evidence of change originates from the period of the 2nd world war, and from the reconstruction and construction period.
-new and demanding needs in a highly developed industry.
- 70s labeled as the prime time for the initial development of design science.

Method Designing: The paradox of Modern Design Education
By Jessica Helfand
In this article, the author has compared the role of an actor with the role of graphic designers, and also relating "method" acting and method design as a more successful practice performed by each roles
- "Through the practice of what we have come to know, today, as
"method" acting, an actor could explore, identify and ultimately reveal the degree to which a character
could be a hugely complex human being with feelings, emotions and often conflicting desires."
To be a successful designer to produce good works, we'd have to understand the role to be another person, fitting ourself in the client's shoes.. and the most important is to perform with emotional honesty to truly engage the audience as a result.
Helfand mentions the positive and negatives of the method designing through our education. The positive is that young designers are trained as thinkers instead of the old service providers. and by doing so, we are able to locate our work in the path we have chosen and defined. The down side is that it is misleading design students to believe in that we are doing art by looking at so much art, and the very act of interpretation is itself the form.
"in being true to ourselves, we distance ourselves from a more universal truth,
the kind that designers, in making messages clear, are so naturally predisposed to understand."

Focusing Your Research Efforts
From: Leedy, Paul D., and Jeanne Ellis Ormrod. Practical Research: Planning and Design. 8th Edition. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Pretence Hall, 2005.
This article is to stimulate us, and to find reason to believe that research can engage enthusiasm and efforts by connecting it to everyday life.
The structure of the research process is:
+ The problem or question, this is the core which research effort revolves around.
+ The statement of the problem must be precisely expressed so that..
+ It can be divided into more manageable sub-problems.
This clarifies the goals and directions of research effort.
- The heart of every research project is the problem
- Look into Dissertation Abstracts International, look for general heading of your interest.
-The world of research and the world of everyday life are intertwined.
In the article, Ormrod and Leedy stated 2 types of research projects:
Basic Research - projects that advance human being's theoretical conceptualizations about a particular topic
Applied Research - projects which can inform human decision making about practical problems
-Research project must involve the interpretation of data.
4 situations to avoid when considering a problem for research purposes:
1. Research projects should not be a ruse for achieving self-enlightenment.
2. A problem whose sole purpose is to compare two sets of data is not a suitable research problem.
3. Calculating a coefficient of correlation between two sets of data to show a relationship between them is not acceptable as a problem for research.
4. Problems that result in a yes or no answer are not suitable problems for research.
Stating the research problem:
1. State the problem clearly and comletely
2. Think through the feasibility of the project that the problem implies.
3. Say precisely what you mean.
4. Edit your work
